Final Exam Information

The final exam for this course will be on Thursday, July 31st, the last day of class.

We will have a review session on Wednesday, July 30th during class.

Here is the format for the final exam:

Style: Blue Book short answer exam. Please bring your own blue book.

Part I:

IDs. Do 5 (out of 7). Identify the person, place, object or idea. State what it is, the text and author with which it is associated and discuss how it helps us understand the text or a theme in the course.

Part II:

Quotations. Do 5 (out of 7). Identify the text, the author and the speaker; give the context for the quotation within the text; explain how the quote is important to either the text as a whole or to ideas we discussed in class by explicitly stating what words in the quote are relevant and how they show that import.

Grading Rubric

Each question is worth 10 points, for a total of 100.

For Part I, you will receive:

  • 3 points for correctly identifying the object
  • 1 point for providing the text with which it is associated
  • 1 point for providing the author with which it is associated
  • 5 points for the discussion of relevance

For Part II, you will receive:

  • 1 point for the author
  • 1 point for the text
  • 1 point for the speaker (if relevant)
  • 2 points for the context (or 3 if there is no speaker)
  • 5 points for the discussion of relevance

Please only choose 5 from each section. If you do more than 5 in a section, I will only grade the first 5.

About

I'm a doctoral student in English Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara. My interests lie in the field known very broadly as the Digital Humanities and I focus on reading digital books (what happens to books as they become not merely digitized, but digital) and reading books digitally (how can we use computers to learn new things about literature). In what spare time I have, I read speculative fiction, transform long strings of yarn into apparel and decor and play with my friends' dogs while eagerly awaiting the day when we move to an apartment complex that will allow us to have one.
